Simone Fermani graduated in Composition at the Conservatory of Perugia in just three years (the normal course is 10 years) and in Orchestra Conducting at the Conservatory S. Cecilia in Rome. He perfected his conducting skills with Franco Ferrara in Rome, with Leonard Bernstein in Vienna and Rome, and with Peter Maag in Bologna, Padua, Venice and Bern. In October 1995, he won the Perrenoud Prize for conducting at the 5th Vienna International Music Competition.
He has conducted and conducts in the most important Italian and international opera houses and concert halls: his speciality is Italian opera, especially the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, whose direct descendant he is.
He has composed two lyric operas, both from librettos by Walter Zidaric: "Orione", a libretto based on the play of the same name by Ercole Luigi Morselli, and "The Ambassador", a libretto based on "The Death of Ivan Il'yc" by Lev Tolstoi.
He founded and conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Catholic University of Milan and the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, Regional Orchestra of Marche.
He discovered and reconstructed the sistrum, an instrument that Gioacchino Rossini conceived and prescribed for the performance of his 'Barber of Seville', officially recognised by the Rossini Foundation in Pesaro, which Teatro alla Scala of Milan wanted in the production of this opera directed by Riccardo Chailly in September 2021, arousing considerable interest from the media and press around the world.
He teaches score reading at the Conservatory “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan and holds masterclasses on the interpretation of Italian opera in several European Universities and Academies.
