  “Le Grand Cahier” is a suite for strings by Belarusian composer Alexander Litvinovsky, written for a stage production based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Hungarian-Swiss writer Agota Kristof (1935-2011). Kristof’s book tells the story of two teenage brothers struggling to survive in a Hungarian bordertown during World War II. Originally written in French and published in Switzerland, the critically acclaimed novel has been described as a «post-Nietzschean nightmare written in the style of a children's diary».
